Tarot

The system of Tarot consists of 78 cards.

22 Major Arcana: life lessons, steps of ascension
58 Minor Arcana: day-to-day situations
Arcana means "secret."

How Does The Tarot Work?
It is my belief that the Tarot responds to our energy and intent and will reflect to us what we most need to be aware of  to assist us in the questions we propose to it. The reader may choose to apply their own intuition to the tarot or they may choose to read the meaning of the cards literally.

  Tarot History
There is as much controversy over the origins of the name, Tarot, as there is over the history of the Tarot deck itself. Agreement is found only in the French spelling, "Tarot," and its pronunciation, "t譲󷦡mp;reg;?quot; Our first reference to the word "tarot," comes from the sixth century Italian word, "Tarocchi" and allusions to the Taro Valley of northern Italy. Some historians and readers believe the word Tarot has its roots in the Torah, synonymous with "Divine Law," and the Hebrew term for the five Books of Moses. Its true origin, however, remains a mystery.

The use of cards can be traced back to a 14th Century European Dominican monk, Brother Johannes, who elusively refers to a card game in 1377. Much of the documented literature speaks mainly about the prohibitions that were repeatedly instituted on cards throughout the centuries. Whether prohibition was specific to Tarot cards or to playing cards in general is unknown, although current documentation points to the latter.

It is believed that both the four-suit deck of 52 game cards, as well as the 22 four-suit Minor Arcana of the Tarot, were introduced to 14th Century Europeans by people of Islam, and used solely for playing games. It is difficult to trace the roots of Tarot as a divination tool and there is little, if any, agreement among historians. Some groups assert that the Minor Arcana Tarot are the literal treasure-chest of ancient Egyptian priests, concealing great wisdom. Other factions insist that the Minor Arcana are nothing more than an embellishment of the standard playing card deck.

To paraphrase Akron Hajo Banzhaf (Tarot researcher and historian): Whatever the origin and age of the Tarot, one is impressed by the story revealed in the twenty-two major Arcana cards; a story which dates back to the primordial daybreak of human consciousness. We recognize in the striking simplicity of the seemingly naﶥ images of the twenty-two pictures in the older Tarot, the myths, fairy tales, and legends from which was written the oldest story of humanity, "The Journey of the Hero."
The above information compiled from "The Crowley Tarot," Akron Hajo Banzhaf
